Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Catholic chapel in Horní Brána, Czech Republic

The Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, is a Baroque chapel on Křížová hora (623 m) in the Horní Brána district of Český Krumlov. Built in 1709 to a design by Jan Dominik Spazzi, it replaced a wooden chapel and was consecrated in 1710. Its roof is topped by a lantern with a finial and a patriarchal cross, and an octagonal ambulatory surrounds it.

A wooden cross chapel stood on Křížová hora until 1709, when it was replaced by a brick chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, designed by Jan Dominik Spazzi and consecrated in 1710. That same year Jan Kristián I of Eggenberg ordered an octagonal ambulatory, finished in 1726, sixteen years after his death. The chapel was dissolved in 1787 and sold at auction, restored in 1850, then renewed by Terezie Schwarzenberková in 1929–33 and again in 1990–91.

The name reflects the veneration of the Cross, a theme deeply rooted in this region's spiritual traditions. Visitors who pass through notice how the building serves as a stopping point on the longer pilgrimage route connecting local religious sites.

The chapel stands on Křížová hora (623 m) in the Horní Brána district, reached on foot along a blue-marked hiking trail that climbs from the town and gives views over Český Krumlov on the way. The pilgrimage area reopened to the public in 2016 and is accessible on weekend and holiday afternoons; entry is voluntary. A mass is held around 14 September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The hill's name may come from a copper cross placed on the summit by townspeople, or from a wooden Spanish cross holding a fragment of the Holy Cross, left there in the mid-17th century by Jesuit preacher Michal Koppe. Both crosses were meant to shield the town from bad weather and natural disasters.
