Dittrichova hrobka, Neo-Renaissance tomb in Krásná Lípa, Czech Republic
The Dittrichova hrobka is a Neo-Renaissance mausoleum located at the southern edge of the cemetery in Krásná Lípa, featuring a Greek cross floor plan with an apse. Its exterior walls are built from sandstone, while the interior space is defined by artistic decoration and architectural details.
This family tomb was designed by architect Julius Carl Raschdorff between 1888 and 1889 for textile manufacturer Carl August Dittrich and his descendants. The structure reflects the wealth and status of its patron during the late 19th century.
The interior walls display frescoes titled 'Journey Through Life' by August Frind, depicting birth, youth, marriage, charitable deeds, and death as distinct life stages. These painted scenes tell a visual story that feels immediate and moving to visitors.
The mausoleum can be accessed through a spiral staircase located behind the altar niche, leading to the crypt where the sarcophagus is housed. Visitors should expect narrow spaces and uneven floor surfaces when exploring the interior.
The crypt ceiling is covered with approximately 200 square meters (2,150 square feet) of gold mosaic tiles executed in 50 to 100 different gold tones, reflecting Venetian craftsmanship traditions. This elaborate technique makes the ceiling an extraordinary work of art.
