Hrádek, Medieval fortified house ruins in Libomyšl, Czech Republic.
Hrádek is a fortified structure in ruins situated on a 22-meter-high hill at the eastern edge of Libomyšl village. The remains show a circular moat and rampart system, with the moat reaching widths up to 20 meters in some areas.
The site was first documented in 1370 and served as a residence for Libomyšl owners through the 14th to 16th centuries. After that period, it lost importance and gradually fell into the ruined state visible today.
A chapel dedicated to Saint George once stood on the fortress from 1698 until 1787, when the villagers took apart its wooden components for a school construction project. The religious building shaped the site's identity during that period.
The site is reachable via local pathways, though sturdy footwear is recommended due to uneven terrain and moisture in the moat areas. Allow enough time to explore both the fortification structure and the surrounding grounds at a comfortable pace.
A protected small-leaved linden tree grows within the fortress area, standing roughly 12 meters tall with a trunk measuring about 3 meters around. This old tree is a botanical survivor that has endured through the long history of the site.
