Neznašov Castle, Empire-style castle in Neznašov, Czech Republic
Neznašov Castle is a single-wing mansion featuring a columned portico on its eastern facade with a triangular pediment typical of Empire style. The building sits near where the Vltava and Lužnice rivers meet.
The original fortress dating to 1540 was transformed into an Empire-style palace around 1800 under Count Prosper Berchtold of Uherčice. This transformation marked a shift from a military structure to an aristocratic residence.
The surrounding park evolved from formal gardens into wild greenery enclosed by tall metal fences. Visitors can observe how nature has gradually reclaimed what was once an carefully maintained grounds.
The building sits roughly 27 kilometers north of České Budějovice in a rural river valley setting. Access is challenging and requires your own transport, as it is an abandoned property with limited public access.
During the second half of the 20th century it served as military storage before falling into disrepair. This unexpected use as a supply depot is hardly visible today but marks a surprising chapter in its recent past.
