Socha svatého Jana Nepomuckého, Baroque statue in Skalička, Czech Republic.
This Baroque sandstone statue rests on a tall pedestal with profiled cornice, displaying three stone coats of arms from the Ullersdorf family. It depicts the saint as a bearded figure in traditional robes, holding a metal cross and a book with a gilded palm branch.
The work was commissioned in 1712 by Jan Josef Ullersdorf, the feudal holder of Skalička, and carved by a local artisan. It was relocated from its original location on the castle grounds to its present site during the 1854-1864 period.
The depiction shows John of Nepomuk in traditional religious vestments that reflect his veneration in Czech devotional practice. This representation served as a focal point for local spiritual observance throughout the centuries.
The monument is freely accessible and stands outdoors, so exercise caution during harsh weather or very wet ground conditions. The best time to view it is on clear days when natural light highlights the sandstone details and gilded elements effectively.
The sandstone was specially treated to remove moss and lichen growth while reinforcing its structural stability. The gilding on the cross and halo has been carefully preserved through restoration efforts, remaining notably bright compared to the weathered patina of the rest of the sculpture.
