Monument of Jan Žižka of Trocnov, Bronze equestrian statue in Tábor, Czech Republic

The Monument of Jan Žižka of Trocnov is an equestrian statue made of sandstone, created by sculptor Josef Strachovský in 1884 and positioned at a central location in Tábor. The statue replaced an earlier bronze version and features inscriptions written by historian František Palacký that describe the military leader's major accomplishments.

Jan Žižka was a military commander who fought in the Hussite Wars and remained undefeated throughout his life until his death in 1424. The monument was erected 1884, centuries after his lifetime, to commemorate this historical figure.

This monument emerged during the late 19th century when Czech society sought to celebrate its military heroes and local pride. It reflects how the town chose to honor a leader who shaped its regional significance.

The statue stands in the town center of Tábor and is easy to locate and access from nearby streets. The inscriptions on the pedestal are clearly visible and readable from the front, allowing visitors to review the historical details carved there.

The statue was originally cast in bronze, but manufacturing defects led to its replacement with a sandstone version. This material transformation makes it an unusual monument that reflects the practical challenges faced during its creation and installation.
