Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Catholic church in Rožmitál na Šumavě, Czech Republic

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also called the Church of Saints Simon and Jude, is a Catholic parish church in Rožmitál na Šumavě. Its 13th-century vaulted presbytery has a keystone carved with the five-petalled rose, and the prismatic tower also dates from the 13th century. The church was remodelled in Neo-Gothic style in 1909 to a design by Franz Schiefthaler of Linz. The main altar is Rococo, from around 1770, with statues of Saints Simon and Jude Thaddeus.

A parish existed in Rožmitál in the 13th century; from 1259 the village belonged to the Cistercians of Vyšší Brod, who held patronage over the church. In 1422 the Hussites plundered the town and the parish nearly vanished; parish registers begin in 1630 and an independent parish was restored eight years later. In 1909 the church, including the nave, was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style to a design by Franz Schiefthaler of Linz.

The village belonged to the Cistercians of Vyšší Brod from 1259, and the monastery held the right of patronage over the parish; monks or clergy presented by the abbey served here. Parish registers are kept from 1630, and an independent parish was established eight years later. The church is still the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of Rožmitál na Šumavě.

The church stands in the village centre of Rožmitál na Šumavě, in the Český Krumlov district, and is listed as a national cultural monument together with its cemetery and wayside shrine. The nave was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style in 1909 to a design by Franz Schiefthaler of Linz, while the vaulted presbytery and the tower masonry date from the 13th century. Look for the five-petalled rose on the vault boss.

The vaulted presbytery dates from the 13th century and its keystone carries the five-petalled rose, the coat of arms of the Rožmberk family. The tower masonry is of the same period. The church's dedication changed from the Assumption of the Virgin Mary to Saints Simon and Jude, though the date of the change has not been traced.
