Butterfly Karlín, Modern commercial building in Karlín, Czech Republic
Butterfly Karlín is a contemporary commercial structure in Karlín with two connected wings and facades containing 40,000 potted plants along with metal panels designed for energy efficiency. The building houses four seasonal gardens representing winter, summer, spring, and fall, each providing distinct public spaces for community use.
The building was completed in 2018 and stands on former industrial land that marked Karlín's transformation from manufacturing to a contemporary urban space. This development was part of the district's larger shift from its industrial past toward modern urban functions.
The entry lobbies feature glass sculptures by artist Maxim Velcovsky depicting water droplets and honoring notable figures from Karlín's past. These artworks create a connection between the contemporary structure and the neighborhood's heritage.
The building is easily accessible and offers various public areas throughout the year suited for both passing pedestrians and intentional visitors. The seasonal gardens change with each season, making visits worthwhile at different times of the year.
The central atrium serves as a gathering space where indoor greenery meets architectural design in a light-filled environment. This area blends green elements with contemporary architecture in a way that merges indoor and outdoor experience.
