Piarists monastery in Litomyšl

The Piarist monastery in Litomyšl is an educational complex centered on a church surrounded by monastic buildings. The grounds include gardens that have evolved into a public space for the community.

Founded in 1640, this monastery became a major educational center in Eastern Bohemia. The buildings have shifted roles over time while maintaining their connection to learning and community use.

The complex houses the Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, whose interior displays religious art from centuries of use. Sculptures by Olbram Zoubek throughout the gardens create meeting points between the monastic buildings and contemporary artistic expression.

Enter through the main gate near Smetana Square, where guided tours are regularly available. The grounds can be explored on foot with multiple pathways connecting the buildings and gardens.

The gardens were once enclosed by monastic walls but now function as a public park open to everyone. This shift shows how a religious site can open to the community while keeping its historical character.
