Kloster der Barmherzigen Brüder, Prag
Kloster der Barmherzigen Brüder, Prag, Hospital monastery in Old Town, Prague, Czech Republic
The Monastery of the Brothers of Mercy in Prague spreads across an entire city block with three courtyards and multiple connected buildings. At the heart stands the Gothic Church of Saints Simon and Jude, which stands apart from the surrounding modern city.
The Church of Saints Simon and Jude was first recorded in 1354 and kept its original floor plan without vaulting. The Brothers of Mercy took over the complex later and transformed it into an important medical center for Prague.
The monastery was founded to serve the sick and poor, and this mission still shapes the character of the place. The spaces reveal how closely prayer and medical care were woven together in daily life.
The complex sits along the Vltava River in Prague 1 and is visible from Dusni Street, where the church facade faces outward. Visitors should allow time to explore the different courtyards and passages, as the grounds are large and interconnected.
The monastery's pharmacy rooms still display shelves and objects from its medical practice days. These rare spaces offer an unexpected glimpse into the everyday practices of earlier healthcare provision.
