Váňův kámen, Historical memorial rock in Kopřivnice, Czech Republic
Váňův kámen is a limestone rock formation that rises approximately 15 meters above ground on the southeastern side of Bílá hora hill. The memorial marks historic land boundaries and attracts both climbers and visitors who want to see the views from above.
The site hosted two significant peasant gatherings in 1643 and 1695 that led to negotiations with authorities. These meetings resulted in improvements to the living conditions of people working the land.
The site carries a name rooted in local history that shifted during the 19th century. The naming after a farmer from the area shows how places gain identity through the people who lived nearby.
The site is accessible via the blue hiking trail from the Muzeum Fojtství parking area and offers several climbing routes of varying difficulty. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and take care in wet weather, as the surface can become slippery.
The rock was once called Devil's Stone based on local legends surrounding the place. Archaeological discoveries from 1879 suggest very early human occupation, with tools and ornaments from pre-Christian times unearthed there.
