MILUJI, Contemporary art installation in Neratovice, Czech Republic

MILUJI is a 3.2 by 14 metre stone inscription on an artificial hill between Mánesova and Dr. E. Beneše streets in Neratovice. Created by Lenka Klodová in 2001, it is carved from Božanov sandstone and stands on a horseshoe-shaped concrete platform. The letters spell the Czech word for 'I love you'.

The work grew out of the 1997 symposium Oživené město Neratovice, organised by the town's Společenský dům under Ivan Fried with Kurt Gebauer of Prague's VŠUP. Lenka Klodová's proposal for a pilgrimage site devoted to love was one of four realised. Sandstone blocks from Božanov were carved over six weeks in 2001 and raised in November on a horseshoe-shaped concrete platform; the unveiling took place on 1 December 2001.

The sculpture's nickname, Neratovice Stonehenge, comes from its resemblance to prehistoric stone sanctuaries: upright sandstone blocks on the only raised spot in the area. It has become a meeting place for locals and a symbol of the town. During the May Máchovy slavnosti festivities below the hill, and on the anniversary of the unveiling, the letters are lit by two 25 W energy-saving lamps.

The sandstone inscription lies on an artificial hill in the wedge between Mánesova and Dr. E. Beneše streets, next to the Neratovice sídliště railway stop opened in 2020. The slope is used for sledging in winter. The letters are lit by two 25 W energy-saving lamps during the May Máchovy slavnosti and on the anniversary of the unveiling.

The letters are carved from Božanov sandstone, not metal, and the block was nicknamed the Neratovice Stonehenge for its horseshoe-shaped concrete platform. In winter the hill is reportedly the only place in town for sledding, and the inscription is lit by two 25 W energy-saving lamps during the May Máchov celebrations and on the anniversary of its unveiling.
