Chmelový orloj, Astronomical clock at the Temple of Hop and Beer in Žatec, Czech Republic.
Chmelový orloj is an astronomical clock in Žatec made from steel and copper and decorated with elaborate hop cultivation motifs. The structure measures about 4 by 7 meters (13 by 23 feet) and features complex timekeeping mechanisms on its face.
This clock was designed by architect Jiří Vaníček and artistic blacksmith Petr Podzemský and unveiled on August 3, 2010. It was created to honor the traditional craftsmanship of the hop industry in the town.
Instead of traditional apostle figures, this clock shows playing cards, while the lower section displays moving figures of people raising beer glasses. This playful design reflects the local connection between hop growing and beer making.
The clock stands at Prokopa Velkého Square in the town center and is an active working mechanism you can watch during the day. The location is easy to reach since it sits in central Žatec, making it convenient for visitors exploring the town.
Below the moving figures sits a symbolic area with the Latin inscription Memento Lupuli Saczensi Cereviseae, which references the town's beer culture. This hidden inscription is easy to miss, but it adds a deeper local meaning to the work.
