Church of Saint Martin, Religious structure in Petrovice u Karviné, Czech Republic.

The Church of Saint Martin is a Roman Catholic parish church in Petrovice u Karviné, built of masonry in 1789 on the site of earlier wooden churches. Its tower received a new roof in 2018. The organ was made by Jan Has of Olomouc and was repaired in 1846 by the organ builder Johann Neusser.

The first wooden church on the site was built in 1335 and burned down in 1490; a second wooden church followed in 1496 and stood until 1789, when it was demolished and replaced by the present brick church. Repairs are recorded in 1839, 1901 and 1908, and the tower roof was renewed in 2018. The organ was built by Jan Has of Olomouc and repaired in 1846 by the organ builder Johann Neusser.

The parish priest from 1920 was Ludvík Sobek (1885–1950), persecuted by the StB after 1948 for his opposition to the regime; he was found hanged in a room of the presbytery on 25 April 1950, two weeks after a threatening letter, and the case was quickly closed as suicide despite marks of violence on the body. A memorial plaque at the church commemorates him.

You can visit the church during active religious ceremonies or community functions. It is best to check opening times beforehand since it primarily serves as an active gathering place for worshippers rather than a typical tourist attraction.

A memorial plaque inside the church honours parish priest Ludvík Sobek (1885–1950), who was interrogated by the StB after 1948 for opposing the regime. On 25 April 1950 he was found hanged in a room of the presbytery; the case was closed as suicide despite marks of violence, and two dogs died at the presbytery that day, probably poisoned.
