Capuchin Monastery Olomouc

The Capuchin Monastery Olomouc is a Baroque complex in the city that includes a main building with a southern wing, a church, and gardens surrounded by boundary walls. The entire site forms a self-contained religious community.

Cardinal Bishop František Dietrichstein invited the Capuchins to Olomouc in 1614 and established the first monastery of the order outside the city walls. That year marked the beginning of their presence in the region.

The monastery reflects building principles that Capuchin monks favor: functional and plain, without unnecessary decoration or luxury. This approach shapes its appearance today and reveals the spirit of the religious community.

The monastery is active today and houses a small community of monks who carry out their daily religious duties. Visitors should know that it remains a functioning place with regular services and is not merely a historical site.

In 1894 the site welcomed a Serafine school, an early educational project that later became the Serafikum institution. This link between religious space and schooling shows how the monastery shaped the local community across generations.
