Muzeum Žlutice, Museu na República Checa
Muzeum Žlutice occupies a building on Velké náměstí that was originally a jail, now converted to display local history. Inside you find artifacts from different periods, archaeological objects, historical documents, a large scale model of a 15th-century battle on the wall, and below ground a lapidarium with stone carvings and ancient pieces found in the area.
The building was originally Žlutice's jail and now displays the town's past through exhibits on historical justice and punishment methods. An interactive exhibition opened in 2021 created by artist Veronika Kudláčková Psotková explores these practices and shows how the legal system operated centuries ago.
The name Žlutice comes from Slavic origins and relates to the town's location. Walking through the streets today, you notice the planned medieval layout with straight streets and a main square, a design that has shaped how locals move and gather in this space.
The museum opens May through September and is accessible Wednesday to Sunday during daytime hours. Call ahead at +420 353 227 171 to confirm current opening times before your visit, as hours may vary seasonally.
Below ground, the lapidarium houses stone sculptures and carved fragments discovered during excavations around town, revealing the area's artistic past that most visitors overlook. Walking through these underground spaces connects you directly to artifacts that tell a quieter story of the region's craftsmanship and heritage.
