Darwin crater, Modern pavilion dedicated to Tasmanian wildlife at Prague Zoo, Czech Republic
Darwin Crater is a circular pavilion at Prague Zoo that displays Tasmanian devils, short-beaked echidnas, and other Australian wildlife species. The spaces inside replicate natural habitats where visitors can watch the animals move and interact in their designed environments.
The pavilion opened in 2024 as part of Prague Zoo's expansion efforts. It represented a major step forward for the zoo following earlier damage from severe flooding.
The exhibit connects visitors with Australian aboriginal heritage through educational displays about traditional relationships between wildlife and indigenous communities.
Feeding sessions with the Tasmanian devils happen three times each day, allowing close observation of their behavior. Information boards in Czech and English provide details about the animals and their natural habits.
The pavilion controls temperature and humidity to match Tasmania's climate conditions for proper animal care. This environmental management allows rare marsupials to thrive thousands of miles away from their native home.
