Libočanská branka, Medieval gate in Žatec, Czech Republic
Libočanská branka is a medieval city gate in Žatec with a rectangular structure and a narrow passage for traffic. The building has served as residential space since 1843 while keeping its historical architectural features intact.
The lower section of the gate likely dates to the 13th century based on wood analysis. It was one of two surviving entrances from the original fortification system that established Žatec as a major fortified city.
This gate served as a key passage through the medieval town wall and still shapes the character of Žatec today. Visitors walking by can see on its facade the different architectural styles that accumulated over the centuries.
The gate is located in the old town and easily reached on foot. The passage is narrow, so care should be taken when walking through this historic opening.
The interior of the gate reveals a striking mix of construction periods across its ceiling vaults. The ground floor features a pointed barrel vault while upper floors have flat ceilings, bringing together Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements.
