Kobylí hora, Granulite quarry in Žernovice, Prachatice, Czech Republic

Kobylí hora is an open-pit quarry on the slope of Kobylí hora, about two kilometres northeast of Prachatice, with its eastern part in the Žernovice cadastre. It extracts grey-green granulite with accessory tourmaline and biotite; the deposit measures roughly 830 × 560 × 110 m. The quarry is owned and operated by Kámen a písek, spol. s r. o.

The quarry produced large stone slabs, and in the 1930s its stone was taken by cableway to build the Husinec reservoir on the Blanice. In the 1960s a gravel crusher was built and a railway siding laid to the site; gravel went to new roads. The quarry later expanded, displacing three houses in Žernovice, and much material went to the Temelín nuclear power station.

The quarry was opened to cut large stone slabs, and in the 1930s its stone went into the Husinec reservoir on the Blanice, carried there by a cableway. Gravel from a crusher built in the 1960s supplied new roads, and much material was later used for the Temelín nuclear power station. Three houses in Žernovice had to give way as the pit grew.

Access to the site is restricted and requires advance permission from the operating company for safety reasons. Visitors should be prepared for noise and heavy activity, and must follow all company safety rules.

In the 1930s stone from the quarry was carried by a cableway to build the Husinec reservoir on the Blanice river. A railway siding was added in the 1960s together with a gravel crusher, and large amounts of material went to the Temelín nuclear power station.
