Apartment of Richard and Johanna Herdan‎, Functionalist apartment in Old Brno, Czech Republic

The Herdan apartment occupies the third floor of Hlinky 46, a functionalist house in Old Brno. Its hallway leads to a kitchen, a dining room with a built-in wall unit, and a small room with tall wardrobes. A glazed wooden partition opens into the large living room, divided by a triumphal arch with display cabinets and a central heating unit styled as a fireplace with travertine cladding and the initials HR.

The flat occupies Hlinky 46, a house owned by wine wholesaler Eugen Teltscher, whose daughter Johanna married Škoda export engineer Richard Herdan on 2 February 1933. Teltscher likely furnished the flat as a wedding gift; the central-heating grille still bears Herdan's initials. The family left for Johannesburg in August 1938, escaping the Holocaust, while the Nazis seized the house in 1943 and deported Teltscher and his wife Elsa to Terezín and Piaski, where they were killed.

The apartment's name comes from Richard Herdan, a Škoda engineer, and Johanna, daughter of wine merchant Eugen Teltscher, who married in February 1933. The interior was designed by architect Emmerich Horvát. A central heating grate bears the initials HR, and a dressing-table drawer has a small dish for cufflinks or jewellery. Descendants returned a drawer in 2021.

The apartment occupies the third floor of Hlinky 46, in Old Brno. It opened to the public during the Open House Brno festival on 29 May 2021, when about 200 visitors saw it. Visits depend on the restoration of the furniture, floors and heating, which has been under way since 2023.

The apartment's central heating is styled as a fireplace with travertine cladding and a metal grille bearing the initials HR, for Richard Herdan. The living room is divided by a triumphal arch with glazed display cases and lighting; the cabinets are walnut-veneered outside and mahogany inside, one lined with Finnish birch.
