Joel Eddins House

The Joel Eddins House is a log building from the early 1800s with a simple two-story design and a traditional hall-and-parlor floor plan. The structure has brick chimneys, a peaked roof, and small four-pane windows upstairs.

The house was built around 1810 near Ardmore and stands as one of the oldest surviving residential buildings in Alabama. It gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The house shows how settlers built their homes in this region, with a layout that was common among families moving west in those times. You can see the practical way people organized their daily living spaces.

You can tour the house by entering through the main hall, where you will find a fireplace as the central feature. A quarter-turn staircase connects the rooms and helps guide you as you move through the different spaces.

The building preserves its original design with one and a half stories, where the upper rooms were intentionally built without doors connecting them to each other. This unusual layout meant residents had to pass through the hall below to reach each upstairs room.
