Giga Nevada, Battery manufacturing facility in Storey County, Nevada, US
Giga Nevada is a factory producing lithium-ion batteries and electric vehicle components in Storey County, about 15 miles east of Reno. The plant covers roughly five million square feet of floor space and ranks among the largest buildings in the world by usable area.
Construction of the plant started in 2014 on previously undeveloped land near Interstate 80. Production began in 2016, initially in partnership with Panasonic for battery cell manufacturing.
The establishment of this manufacturing center brought substantial changes to northern Nevada, creating employment opportunities for 12,000 local residents by 2022.
The facility sits directly off Interstate 80, roughly halfway between Reno and Fernley, and is visible from a distance. Visitor access is not available, as this is an active production site with strict safety protocols.
The plant has its own power system combining solar arrays, wind turbines, and geothermal sources with the goal of meeting all energy needs independently. A dedicated rail spur was built nearby to allow direct transport of raw materials and finished products by train.
