Lincoln Mill and Mill Village Historic District
Lincoln Mill and Mill Village Historic District, Cotton mill historic district in Huntsville, United States.
Lincoln Mill and Mill Village Historic District is a former cotton-spinning area in Huntsville with preserved factory buildings and worker housing from around 1900. The structures have been restored and now house businesses and offices, while the original layout and form of the place remain visible.
The mill began in 1900 as Madison Spinning Company and grew under William Lincoln Barrell to become the largest cotton producer in Huntsville. After closing as a textile factory in 1955, engineers moved in who worked on the Apollo Lunar Rover.
The district reflects the lives of factory workers who shaped this place, with buildings and streets showing how a mill community was organized in the early 1900s. The homes and industrial structures reveal daily routines deeply connected to cotton production.
The site is easy to walk through and clearly shows its original layout, with paths running between the old buildings. Many of the restored structures are accessible during the day and contain restaurants, shops, and places to stop and rest.
After transforming into offices, the site housed a team of engineers working on one of space exploration's most important inventions: the moon vehicle. This connects a place once rooted in everyday labor with one of humanity's greatest achievements.
