Racine Reef Light, Historical lighthouse in Lake Michigan near Racine, United States.
Racine Reef Light is a historic lighthouse in Lake Michigan, located about 3 kilometers east of Racine Harbor. The structure features an octagonal dwelling with a central tower built on a brick foundation.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1906 following several maritime incidents on the reef. It warned passing ships of the danger until it was deactivated in 1961.
The preserved lens from the original equipment is now on display at the Racine Heritage Museum, where visitors can see it directly. It shows how ships were once guided across the water using light.
The site marks a dangerous underwater area with rocks and shallows that extend several kilometers into the water. Access today is limited since the structure is no longer in active use.
During winter months, keepers could occasionally walk across the frozen lake surface to reach the mainland when boat travel became impossible. This practice reveals just how harsh the conditions were for those stationed there.
