Conabeer Chrysler Building, Commercial building in Asheville, United States
Conabeer Chrysler Building is a three-story red brick and limestone commercial building on a corner in Asheville, North Carolina. Its tall decorated parapet carries a central raised section dated 1925, while the ground floor now has a storefront and recessed double doors facing the sidewalk.
Built in 1928, the building was first used by Conabeer Motor Company, a local Chrysler dealership, and later became a garment plant for Kar-Lyn in the 1950s. After a long period as a furniture store and then office space, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The checkered tile floor inside the former showroom is still visible today, and local visitors often notice it while spending time at the board game café. Large glass windows facing the street remain from the era when cars were displayed to passersby, which gives the ground floor a welcoming, storefront feel.
The building sits at the edge of a paved street, so the ground floor is easy to reach from the sidewalk. Visitors can walk around the exterior to see the parapet and window bays from across the street.
Cars originally reached the upper floors through a ramp system, not the front doors, since the front entrance was too narrow. The building also kept its second floor as a parts area and third floor as car storage, which many passersby never suspect today.
