The 496-acre district includes 1049 buildings, Knox County Courthouse, Knox College, and numerous residential streets within the original town layout.
Following Reverend George Washington Gale's vision in 1834, settlers established this college town after purchasing over 10,000 acres in Knox County.
The district reflects strong anti-slavery values through architecture and landmarks, including locations connected to the Underground Railroad movement.
The district boundaries extend along Berrien, Clark, Pearl, and Sanborn Streets, incorporating both commercial structures and residential neighborhoods.
The area contains white houses built with flaxseed oil paint, differentiating it from other prairie towns of the nineteenth century.
