Old Anchorage City Hall, Public administration building in downtown Anchorage, United States.
Old Anchorage City Hall is a two-story reinforced concrete building with a rusticated ground floor and round-arch openings located on West Fourth Avenue. The structure demonstrates the construction methods typical of government buildings from the 1930s in Alaska's largest city.
The building was completed in 1936 during the Great Depression with support from the Public Works Administration. Its construction marked a shift in Anchorage from wood-frame to reinforced concrete construction methods for public buildings.
The structure housed essential municipal services including the mayor's office, city council chambers, municipal offices, library, jail cells, and firemen's quarters until 1979.
The building now houses Visit Anchorage, the city's visitor information center, providing maps and tourism resources. Its downtown location makes it easy to find and a convenient starting point for exploring the surrounding area.
Until 1979, this building housed the city's police and fire departments, jail cells, and a public library all under one roof. This concentration of essential services shows how city operations were organized in a single compact structure.
