Farish Street Neighborhood Historic District, Historic Black business district in Jackson, United States.
Farish Street Historic District is a historic Black commercial area in Jackson that spans multiple blocks between two main streets. The district contains a mix of older brick and wooden storefronts, apartment buildings, and former entertainment venues that formed the center of a once-thriving community.
The district developed as an economically independent Black community after legal segregation took hold, with Black business owners controlling hundreds of properties in the area. This became the largest surviving Black commercial district in Mississippi and represented a period of strong economic control by the Black community.
This neighborhood was the heart of Black entertainment and music production, home to recording studios where local musicians created and recorded their work. Theaters and music venues made it a gathering place where the community celebrated its own culture and talent.
The district is best explored on foot, as the buildings are tightly grouped and details reveal themselves as you walk slowly through the streets. Visitors should allow enough time to observe the old facades, window styles, and architectural details from different periods.
One entrepreneur, Sidney Dillon Redmond, owned about 300 rental properties within the district, showing the economic reach of Black investors of that era. His vast property collection demonstrates how wealth and control became concentrated in the hands of a few ambitious Black business leaders.
