Gypsy Camp Historic District, Summer camp historic district in Benton County, US.
Gypsy Camp Historic District is a summer camp property along the Illinois River bank in Benton County that has preserved a collection of historic buildings. The site contains four wooden cabins, a dining hall, three residential structures, and a central rock arbor set across approximately 11.5 acres (4.7 hectares) of land.
The camp opened in 1921 as Arkansas's first dedicated summer facility for girls and operated continuously until 1978. Its long run demonstrated its importance as a pioneering venue for girls' summer recreation in the region.
The camp was known for activities where girls were divided into two groups that competed in swimming, tennis, and horseback riding. The split into red and orange teams created a tradition of friendly competition that shaped camp life.
The property is maintained by its current owners Gypsy Camp and Canoe and offers guided tours where visitors can explore the preserved buildings. The riverside location provides a pleasant setting for walking and viewing the historic structures.
The cabins were open with screened walls positioned close to the river, where girls stayed for stays lasting up to one month. During these extended periods, swimming tasks and cabin upkeep were part of the daily rhythm, teaching girls self-reliance and practical skills.
