Alapocas Run State Park, Delaware state park in Wilmington, US.
Alapocas Run State Park is a Delaware state park in New Castle County that runs along Brandywine Creek, featuring wooded trails, athletic fields, a natural rock climbing wall, and the historic Blue Ball Barn. The land rises and dips across forested slopes, open meadows, and stream corridors that cut through the property.
The land was protected by William Poole Bancroft in the early 1900s after granite had been quarried there for decades, and the quarry did not close until 1938. Bancroft was a local textile manufacturer who believed open land should be preserved for working people to enjoy.
The Blue Ball Barn holds a folk art collection that reflects the rural traditions of the region, and visitors can walk through the building to see local craftsmanship on display. The barn's name comes from a nearby inn that once marked the road for travelers passing through.
The trails cross uneven ground and can be wet near the streams, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading out. The park connects to the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail system, which makes it easy to extend a walk into neighboring green areas.
The old quarry walls are the only natural climbing spot in Delaware, used today for top-rope climbing and rappelling. Very few parks in the country can point to a working industrial site that transformed this directly into a recreational one without any artificial modification to the rock.
