Baynard Boulevard Historic District, Historic residential district in Wilmington, Delaware.
Baynard Boulevard Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Wilmington containing 77 buildings with Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and Queen Anne architectural styles. The homes spread across about 24 acres and show how residential architecture evolved during a specific period.
Development of the district began in 1893 and followed the American streetcar suburb concept that was popular at the time. Most buildings were constructed between 1895 and 1930, when this type of residential development was rapidly expanding.
Religious buildings in this district reflect the community's diversity and show how different faith communities lived side by side. Visitors can see McCabe United Methodist Church, Beth Shalom Synagogue, and Hanover Presbyterian Church, which still define the neighborhood character.
The area is accessible for walking and retains the original street layout from around 1900. Visitors should allow time for a leisurely walk to notice the details of individual homes and how the streets are organized.
The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and preserves the original architectural character from that era. This official designation protects the homes and helps prevent alterations that would erase their authentic appearance.
