Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, Natural wetland refuge near Hennepin, United States
Dixon Waterfowl Refuge is a wildlife sanctuary near Hennepin that protects roughly 3000 acres of lakes, marshes, and prairies in Illinois. The refuge contains diverse habitats that support native birds and other animals typical of the region.
The area was drained and converted to farmland in 1908 by the Hennepin Drainage and Levee District. Restoration of the natural wetlands began in 2001 and transformed it into the protected refuge it is today.
The Illinois Audubon Society designated this location as an Important Bird Area, making it central to regional conservation efforts.
Visitors can walk on multiple boardwalks and trail systems throughout the grounds and use a dedicated bird observation tower for viewing. Peak visiting times are during spring and fall migration seasons when bird diversity is at its highest.
The refuge received international designation in 2012 as one of only 41 Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance in the entire United States. This recognition highlights its role in protecting critical bird habitats at a global scale.
