The Royal Neighbors National Home extends across 77 acres along Rockingham Road, featuring Georgian Revival architecture and Mississippi River views.
Five hundred people attended the dedication ceremony of the National Home in July 1931, which initially accommodated 52 residents in need of housing.
The district represents a milestone in women's financial independence as the first fraternal benefit society providing life insurance protection specifically for women.
The property contains eight structures, including two contributing buildings, one site, one structure, two objects, and two non-contributing buildings.
Residents were required to transfer their assets to the society in exchange for lifelong care until policy changes in 1996 introduced a rental option.
