Terrible Mountain

Terrible Mountain is a summit reaching 2883 feet (879 meters) within the Green Mountains of Vermont. The steep slopes rise about 661 feet (201 meters) above the surrounding valley.

Settlers in the late 1700s named this peak for its difficult terrain, which shaped travel patterns and settlement decisions. The challenging landscape influenced the growth of nearby Weston as a distinct community.

Local residents historically crossed these slopes with ox wagons to reach medical help during emergencies. The mountain springs here provided water for the homes and farms in the valley below.

Hikers should wear sturdy boots for the steep terrain and loose rocks found on the slopes. Weather changes quickly at elevation, so come prepared for shifting conditions throughout the day.

The lower slopes hold remnants of old cellar holes and stone walls from past settlements that tell stories of earlier inhabitants. These structures show that farming communities once thrived on these hillsides long ago.
