Emsworth Locks and Dam, Navigation system on Ohio River in Pittsburgh, United States.
Emsworth Locks and Dam is a navigation facility on the Ohio River west of Pittsburgh consisting of two locks of different sizes and a gravity dam. The larger lock chamber is designed for cargo vessels while the smaller chamber accommodates smaller and private boats, with the dam extending on both sides of Neville Island.
Construction of the original facility began in 1919 and was completed in 1922, making it the oldest navigation project on the Ohio River. The structure was later expanded and modernized to meet growing demands of river traffic and regional commerce.
The facility connects regional industries and enables the transport of raw materials like coal and grain from the interior to downstream ports and power plants. Visitors can watch from observation points as large barges and occasionally recreational boats enter and exit the lock chambers.
The best vantage points for watching boats are from public observation areas along the river bank where you have a clear view of the locking process. Visit during daytime operating hours when boat traffic is regular and the facility is most active.
The facility is operated by thirteen vertical lift gates that regulate water with precision and offer a fascinating sight when in action. This sophisticated gate system allows the locks to process hundreds of boats monthly while keeping water levels stable.
