The residences feature fieldstone foundations, log construction, and stone walls typical of early-1900s mountain lodge design.
The district was established in the 1930s by immigrants from Germany, Austria, and Norway seeking to create a summer retreat near New York City. Development continued through the 1940s as additional lodges and community facilities were built to support the growing settlement.
The lodges showcase European building techniques including log construction and stone details that reflect the settlers' heritage from central Europe. Walking through the district, you can see how these architectural choices shaped the daily life and identity of the original community.
The grounds offer boat launches, swimming areas, and tennis courts along with pavilions that show how residents used the space for recreation. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the roads are unpaved and the terrain is uneven in places.
