Bull Hill, Mountain summit in Putnam County, US
Bull Hill is a mountain summit in the Hudson Highlands of New York, marked by open rock outcrops and forested slopes that extend all the way to the top. Several marked trails lead to the peak, each with a different level of difficulty.
The mountain is said to have taken its name from a bull that fell to its death while being chased down its steep slopes during a hunt. The story stuck and became part of how local people identify the place.
Bull Hill draws local hiking groups who return to its trails through different seasons, treating it as a familiar outdoor spot rather than a destination. On the summit, people tend to linger, looking west over the river before heading back down.
The trails are marked, but the climb involves a real elevation gain, so sturdy footwear and enough water matter. Starting early in the day is a good idea, especially on weekends when the parking area fills up quickly.
On a clear day, the summit offers a view that lines up West Point Military Academy and Storm King Mountain across the Hudson at the same time. Few spots in the region allow both landmarks to be seen together from a single vantage point.
