Lindheimer Astrophysical Research Center, Astronomical observatory at Northwestern University, Evanston, US.
Lindheimer Astrophysical Research Center was an astronomical observatory at Northwestern University containing two domed structures. The facility housed a 40-inch Cassegrain reflector telescope for research purposes and a 16-inch model designed for student instruction and learning.
Construction of this facility was completed in 1966 with funding from the Benjamin F. Lindheimer estate and the National Science Foundation. The observatory served the university as a center for astronomical research and education until its closure in 1995.
The center established Northwestern University as a center for astronomical studies, supporting student education and research from 1967 to 1995.
Both telescopes were manufactured by Boller and Chivens, with the larger instrument equipped with a rapid-scanning optical spectrometer. Viewing conditions would have varied depending on weather and light pollution in the surrounding area.
The building demonstrated remarkable resilience during demolition attempts in 1995, remaining partially intact due to its external support braces. This structural feature revealed an unexpected strength against controlled destruction.
