A library association was founded in Bloomfield in the 1870s, charging a subscription fee to borrow books. On November 21, 1911, the Carnegie Corporation of New York accepted the Commercial Club's application for a $10,000 grant, and a December 30, 1911 election approved construction. Designed by Frank E. Wetherell of Des Moines firm Wetherell and Gage and built by contractor C.W. Ennis, the library was dedicated on August 8, 1913, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

The library's name and role trace to an 1870s subscription library association, where members paid a fee to borrow books. The Commercial Club of Bloomfield later pushed for a free public library, applying to the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which granted $10,000 on November 21, 1911. A town election on December 30, 1911 approved the new building, dedicated August 8, 1913.
