Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant, Aircraft manufacturing facility at Offutt Field, Nebraska, US
The Glenn L. Martin Bomber Plant was a military aircraft assembly facility built at Offutt Field in Nebraska. The main assembly building covered a very large area and was connected to a concrete runway and several hangars designed for large-scale bomber production.
The plant was built in 1942 to meet the military's need for bombers during World War II, and it stopped production in 1945. In those three years, it became one of the main centers of wartime aircraft manufacturing in the country.
The plant's name honors Glenn L. Martin, one of the early figures in American aviation manufacturing. During its years of operation, women made up a large part of the workforce, taking on industrial roles that had rarely been open to them before.
The site sits on an active Air Force base and is not open to the general public without prior authorization. Anyone interested in visiting should contact the base directly in advance to find out what is required.
Two of the bombers assembled at this plant were later used to drop atomic weapons on Japan in 1945. That makes this Nebraska factory one of the very few places directly connected to the final days of World War II in the Pacific.
