Castle Mont Rouge, Unfinished castle on Red Mountain, Rougemont, United States.
Castle Mont Rouge is an unfinished building on a wooded hillside near Rougemont, North Carolina, built from white marble and cream-colored local stone. It features 18 small towers along its outer walls and a central turret that rises above the tree line.
Sculptor Robert Mihaly started building the structure in 2000 without formal blueprints, working entirely from his own vision. Construction stopped in 2006 and the site has remained unfinished since then.
The castle includes studios for sculptors, painters, and a foundry, showing it was designed as a center for artists to work. You can see how the spaces were arranged to support creative activities.
The building sits along Mountain Brook Road and is still under renovation, so access may be limited on any given day. It is worth checking conditions before making the trip out to the site.
Mihaly designed the building to include studios for sculptors and painters as well as a foundry, making it more of an artist's village than a conventional residence. The layout of the spaces still reflects that original intent even in its unfinished state.
