Van Buren Post Office, United States historic post office
The Van Buren Post Office is a one-story brick building built in 1936 in the Art Deco style, marked by clean lines and minimal decoration. The structure combines functional design with craftsmanship and maintains its original exterior appearance and interior layout to this day.
The building was planned in 1936 and opened in 1937 as part of federal efforts to aid economic recovery during the Great Depression. The mural was completed in 1940 by E. Martin Hennings, an artist from New Mexico, as part of a government-funded art program.
The interior features a mural depicting pioneers establishing their home, reflecting the early settlement history of Arkansas. This artwork connects the building's function with local heritage and makes visible the contributions of those who built the community.
The post office is located on South 7th Street in downtown Van Buren and continues to operate as an active postal facility. Visitors can view the mural in the lobby while using regular mail services.
The artist E. Martin Hennings who created the mural was from the renowned Taos Society of Artists, a respected group of painters based in New Mexico. His work in Van Buren thus connects southwestern artistic traditions with local Arkansas history.
