British Overseas Restaurant Corporation, defunct restaurant in Portland, Oregon
The British Overseas Restaurant Corporation was a restaurant in north Portland serving food inspired by British and colonial traditions. The simple building blended with nearby homes and small businesses, with seating for about fifty guests arranged for individual diners and groups.
The restaurant opened in early 2016 as Saffron Colonial, serving dishes like Plantation Punch and Winston Churchill Breakfast. The owner renamed it British Overseas Restaurant Corporation in April that year to avoid protests about the original name and its theme.
The restaurant sat in a neighborhood with deep roots in African American culture and history. Walking through the area, visitors could sense the community's past and the character of the streets around it.
The restaurant was located in a quiet residential area and offered a relaxed place to eat with family or friends. Reservations were recommended, especially on weekends when the space filled up quickly.
Owner Sally Krantz was a historian who had previously run bakeries in Hong Kong. She aimed to demonstrate how British cuisine had been shaped by colonial history and saw her work as an honest exploration of cultural exchange.
