Poland Springs Historic District
Poland Springs Historic District, Historic resort district in Poland, Maine, US
Poland Springs Historic District is a former resort property in Maine featuring various buildings, a golf course, and natural springs arranged across a landscaped setting. The site includes structures from different periods, such as the Executive Inn built in the 1960s and the All Souls Chapel used for services and events.
The site was established in 1794 and grew into a prominent destination during the 1800s when visitors traveled there for the supposed healing powers of the spring water. Its reputation expanded significantly as word spread about the purported health benefits.
The Maine State Building, relocated from the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, now serves as a museum where visitors can explore objects and stories tied to the resort's past. The structure itself stands as a reminder of when this place was known far beyond Maine.
The property spreads over considerable ground, so visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes and plan enough time to explore different areas. Some sections are accessible on foot while others may require alternate transportation.
The 1907 bottling plant features a distinctive square tower with Tuscan columns and a pyramidal roof, marking where spring water distribution started. This striking structure became the foundation for a business that eventually made the location's name known across America.
