The house was built in 1881 and housed Joseph Smith III, leader of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, until 1906. This long residence made it a key location in Iowa's religious history.
After 1906 the house was renamed Liberty Home and became one of two church homes for aged members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The Community of Christ, as the church is now known, still runs it as a museum, and since 1973 it has been restored to how it looked during Joseph Smith III's occupancy.
