J.V. Banta House

The J.V. Banta House features a limestone foundation, irregular floor plan, and hipped roof with decorative elements characteristic of late 19th-century residential architecture.

Built in 1902 by local builders Dan Webster and Jap Smith, the house was designed by mail-order architect George Franklin Barber for attorney and banker J.V. Banta.

The residence represents the architectural preferences of successful business professionals in early 20th century Iowa through its detailed craftsmanship and design elements.

Located at 222 McLane Street, the property received recognition from the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

This house stands as the only known example in Iowa of Design No. 10 from George F. Barber's 1899 catalog Modern Dwellings and Their Proper Construction.
