Holliwell Covered Bridge, Covered bridge in Winterset, United States.
The Holliwell Covered Bridge is a wooden structure crossing Middle River using a timber lattice truss design. The bridge displays traditional 19th-century craftsmanship with reinforced arches and metal fasteners throughout its span.
The bridge was built in 1880 by Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster and served as a transportation link across the river for generations. After a modern bypass opened in 1986, the structure was taken out of regular service and later underwent complete restoration.
The bridge gained recognition as a filming location for The Bridges of Madison County, drawing visitors interested in movie settings. Many come to see the same view captured in that well-known film.
The structure can be crossed on foot to experience the construction and enjoy views of the river. Visitors should be prepared for high water levels during heavy rain and allow time to explore the surrounding grounds.
This bridge ranks among the oldest and rarest wooden crossings still standing in the region and once held the record as the longest timber span in the state. Seeing it reminds visitors how few structures from this era have survived.
