Madison County Courthouse, Renaissance courthouse in Winterset, Iowa.
The Madison County Courthouse features identical four-sided elevations with columned porticos over each entrance, topped by a 136-foot silver dome.
After the previous courthouse burned down in 1875, architect Alfred H. Piquenard designed this Renaissance structure, which was completed in 1878 at a cost of $120,000.
The building represents a period of civic development in Iowa, becoming part of the Winterset Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District in 2015.
Located at 112 North John Wayne Drive, the courthouse maintains regular office hours and requires professional attire for court proceedings and jury service.
The courthouse contains a 1,500-pound bell within its dome structure and displays solid walnut woodwork throughout its interior spaces.
