Hogback Covered Bridge, Historical covered bridge in Winterset, Iowa, US
Hogback Covered Bridge is a roofed road bridge that crosses the North River with a tunnel-like wooden structure. It uses a Town lattice truss design and spans approximately 100 feet (30 meters) across the water.
The structure was built in 1884 and represents one of the few remaining covered bridges from an original group of 19 in Madison County. It was later thoroughly restored and continues to preserve an important example from this construction period.
The bridge demonstrates construction methods that were common in rural communities during the 1800s. Visitors can directly observe how the wooden and steel structure was built and understand the practical engineering of that era.
Access is available through parking areas and walking paths near Douglas Township Road in the surrounding area. The site is relatively easy to reach and provides good opportunities to view the bridge from both outside and inside.
The name comes from a distinctive limestone ridge in the area that marks the landscape. The bridge underwent extensive restoration work and now demonstrates how such historical structures can be successfully renewed.
