Imes Bridge, Covered bridge in St. Charles, United States
The Imes Bridge is a wooden covered span that crosses Clanton Creek. The structure displays a pitched roof and uses a lattice framework with additional support beams.
The bridge was built in 1870 and originally stood near a grain mill. It was relocated twice, first in 1887 to a new location and finally in 1977 to St. Charles.
The bridge takes its name from the Imes family who settled in this area. Visitors can observe the carpentry techniques that were used in its construction.
The bridge is located on Main Street and is designed for pedestrian and light vehicle traffic. Parking is available nearby, and the pathways around the structure are well maintained.
In 1959 a loaded truck crashed through the floor, but the local community repaired the damage in less than a week. This quick action showed how much residents valued keeping this structure standing.
